JDZ News! items for January 2004

January 2004 news items:

27 January '04: Johnny Depp, Academy Award Nominee! "Holy crap, Johnny Depp actually got nominated! Never in a million years would I expect this." -- that was JoBlo.com's reaction to today's Academy Award nominations, broadcast live across the world. This is Johnny's first-ever Oscar nomination, after 20 years in the acting business -- and ain't it about time! Go Johnny!! The Deppster's own reaction was far more humble than that of his fans: "I am very grateful and touched that the members of the Academy have nominated me for the work in 'Pirates'. It's an honor to be mentioned in the same breath with such talented actors. But the most moving thing for me has been the response from the audience - kiddies and adults alike. I am really happy people liked our movie." Thanks to Shadow, Sharon and Reemi for finding the great quotes.

The reaction to the nominees' list is starting to come in from film critics, and here are the latest: The Times: "The really exciting nominations for me were 13-year-old Keisha Castle-Hughes in 'Whale Rider' and Johnny Depp as Best Actor for his performance in 'Pirates of the Caribbean' - which goes to show you that Academy members have a sense of humour after all." Chud.com: "You never know if the Academy might go comedy.. and hand the award to Depp, who certainly earned it." And Roger Ebert's reaction: "What imagination to honor Johnny Depp, who transformed a pirate epic with his weird and daring performance." Thanks Anonymous, L, Reemi and sandstorm for the finds.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of The Black Pearl got a total of 5 Oscar nominations, including Johnny's:
BEST ACTOR
BEST MAKEUP
BEST SOUND MIXING
BEST SOUND EDITING
BEST VISUAL EFFECTS

Ladbroke's odds on Johnny's chances of winning the Best Actor Oscar reads more like the number of times that each of his fans has watched Pirates.. but it's wonderful that the normally straight-laced Academy members finally chose to acknowledge the Deppster's inspired work. Yahoo has a great slideshow of Johhny pics -- click on the 'Related Slideshow - Johnny Depp' pic at the right of the screen. And you can cast your vote on the 'Best Actor' nominations at Yahoo's weekly poll and also at Premiere.com's poll. Thanks to johnnylubber and Anonymous for the cute items.

Hangin' cool at the Golden Globes -- Getty Images, FilmMagic.com and Rex Features all have extra photos up of Johnny and Vanessa on the red carpet; a grinning Johnny takes pride of place on E!'s Golden Globes line-up, and Lynn's added lots of great moment-by-moment screencaps at her site. Thanks to Anonymous, Reemi, johnnylubber and Tansy for hunting down the new pics. The fashion police were split on JD's styling, but micdus & johnnylubber found articles at the Houston Chronicle, the Toronto Star and JoBlo.com that summed up our thoughts:"How cool was Johnny Depp... in his fedora and his chic partner, Vanessa Paradis looking like a flapper?"

And finally, there's a small Secret Window mention at JoBlo.com with a link to some fine new pics of 'Mort Rainey' at the Z Review, epecially for those of you who like men in cardigans... Thanks to Shadow and L for the nice suprise in amongst all the Oscar buzz :-) And while you're at JoBlo, cast your vote for the Golden Schmoes, where Johnny is already way ahead of the field for 'Favorite Celebrity of the Year'. You've got 3 days left in which to sign-up at the site and cast your votes.

25 January: Johnny and Vanessa are on the red carpet again! Every Depphead tuned in tonight for the Golden Globe Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in LA. Photos are coming in at Yahoo, Wire Image and the other photo sites.

Johnny was nominated for 'Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy)'.

Athough JD missed out on nabbing the Golden Globe award (it went to Bill Murray), Captain Jack found a place in many critics' hearts. micdus found a nice Golden Globes push for Johnny at CBS, Really found a piece on the main headliners of 2003, Sandstorm found a NY Post article, and Really and Annie found another heartening write-up on the Golden Globe contenders: "The Globes, of all award ceremonies this year, should recognize Johnny Depp."

And Johnny has received the most rewarding of all the award nods, with the Screen Actors Guild nomination for 'Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role', as voted for by fellow actors. Thanks to Gina, Anon in LA and Reemi and everyone else who got up early to watch the live nomination announcements and report at the Zone! You can see the whole list at the official site and see Journal Now's article on Johnny's award-hitting performance.

With most of the Award season nominations already announced, the buzz is now on for the Oscars... Gina, teachersforDepp, johnnylubber, Reemi and deppenpointe found articles at USA Today, Fox News, Oscar Watch.and Nola.com (click on 'Outside the US' to get past the registration). The Academy Award nominations are announced this Tuesday 27th Jan with live coverage on E! News Live at 8:30am ET (1:30pm in the UK).

BAFTAs are the British equivalent of the Oscars, and the Brits loved Johnny in 'Pirates'. He's nominated for 'Best Actor in a Leading Role', and Pirates of the Caribbean is one of the nominees for 'Orange Film of the Year'. The BAFTAs awards ceremony will be held on Sunday February 15th at The Odeon, Leicester Square, London. Thanks to Emma and to Reemi for the news.

The Deppster's dress sense at the Critics' Choice Awards made the headlines - thanks random person for the cute find. Cathy found some great enlargeable pics from the event, and Reemi found a spread of new thumbnails.

When you've finished peering at the pics, read Shadow's wonderful fictitious interview with Johnny, up at JoBlo.com. Great work, girl!

Once Upon a Time in Mexico released on DVD in the US on 20 January and on video on April 6th. If you haven't already got your hands on it, Shadow and Alix found a review at DVD Talk, including descriptions of such natty extras as Rodriguez's 'Ten Minute Flick School' and 'Ten Minute Cooking School'. And johnnylubber found a neat piece of the DVD cover art plus an interview with Robert Rodriguez at Underground Online, where he talks about Johnny's contribution to the film.

'Con Man' has been puzzling fans for a while now...It's now listed at Amazon.com with a release date of 27th January, and the cover art and film synopsis definitely suggests it's a re-issue of the 1997 film Cannes Man. Thanks to RT, amimaus and everyone who's commented. If anyone gets their hands on it (which, at the initial price of $60, ain't likely!), please let us know if it's a re-cut of the original movie or simply a plain-but-welcome re-release!

Ed Wood was finally due out on DVD in the US on 3rd February, but it's suddenly been withdrawn. Thanks Shadow for finding this article about the unexplained delay, and to Delphi and Kyoko for finding clips from the film at Video.com.

While the Ed Wood dvd goes onto the back burner, Secret Window suddenly breaks into a home run... Emma found the great trailer at the new Sony SW site, and you can also view different formats at The Movie Box and catch the Quicktime version at Apple trailers (thanks johnnylubber). And thanks to Emma, Reemi, Axel's Dreamer, Linda B, Gypsy Pirate , Joon, Cilla, Anon in LA, Lady Mercareth and everyone else who gave us the heads-up on the change of release date -- US fans can now see Secret Window on 12 March. Reuters, Yahoo and Zap2it all reported the bump-up of its release to ride the thermals of Johnny's current heat at the box office.

10 January: Johnny made a surprise appearance at the BFCA's 9th annual Critics' Choice Awards, hiding behind Jerry Bruckheimer's back when Jerry was accepting the award for 'Best Family Film' for Pirates of the Caribbean. Johnny missed out on winning the 'Best Actor' award (that went to Sean Penn), but his nomination was a deserved acknowledgement of his brilliant work in 'Pirates'. For those who didn't get to see the show, here are some quick tv caps of Johnny on stage with Jerry: pic 1, pic 2, pic 3, pic 4, pic 5, pic 6, pic 7 and pic 8. And thanks to Gina and evelyne who found the pics of Johnny & Vanessa at Wire Image and Getty Images.

8 January '04: US fans had a special treat when Entertainment Tonight gave us a sneak peek at Johnny's latest movie, 'Secret Window'! Thanks so much to mellymel and Detective Hanson for the heads-up. Find out if the show airs in your area by clicking on the 'Watch ET' link at the ET site.
