February 04:
Lock the door, take the phone off the hook, warm up the
vcr.. Johnny is nominated for 'Best
Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role' in
the Academy
Awards, and today's the day! This is the first time in Johnny's
20-year career that he's been nominated by the prestigious Academy,
and Deppheads the world over will be tuning in to wish him well.
There have been 3 fantastic articles this week about The Deppster's
Oscar chances: Zap2it.com has Johnny's
full reaction to his SAG win and his recognition by the
Academy; Chris
Bridges gives 10 indisputable reasons why the Oscar should
go to Johnny; and JoBlo has a typically forthright feature entitled
'How
I learned to stop worrying and love Johnny Depp'. Thanks
to RC Red, neophyte, Emma, random
person and johnnylubber
for the terrific finds. |

When
Johnny hits the Red Carpet this evening he might well have
his proud Mom on his arm, according to this
article that Reemi
found at the NY Times. Then it's on to Elton
John's After-Show party - thanks Valeris.
Make
sure you catch all the action by tuning in to E!'s Red Carpet
and After-Show party coverage, and the world-wide transmission
of the Academy Awards ceremony itself.
For more details of Oscar coverage on tv in the US and UK,
see the JDZ Calendar. |

Depp
has heat... Johnny's Best
Actor win at last Sunday's SAG
Awards has the critics buzzing like bees around the honey
pot.. USA Today has another of those 'Should
Win/Will Win' features, and the runners & riders in
the
Oscar betting stakes saw JD surge up the ranking. Thanks
Detective Hanson
and Reemi for
the neat finds. And there were literally stacks of articles
on how Johnny has thrown the Oscar race wide open, including
these at E!
Online, Chicago
Sun-Times, The
Guardian, Oscar
Watch, Business
Week, NY
Daily News, Yahoo
Movies, ABC
News, the
BBC, Rediff.com,
GM
Today and The
Gate. Thanks to everyone who reported - including deppaholic,
micdus, Stace, Really, marcellert, Axel'sDreamer, Michellee4u,
and especially Reemi
who excelled in finding new Oscar snippets. |
| |
|
Trust me - I'm not nuts.. There's a cute Pirates
video interview from July '03 at KTvu.com, and MSN has an
exclusive interview clip with Johnny as part of their Best
Actor Oscar video. Both E!
Online and Yahoo!
Movies have chosen Johnny to spruce up their Academy Awards
intro pages and, for UK fans, there's a
great article on "Hollywood's most flagrant maverick"
in today's Independent newspaper. Thanks to Amy,
PHTadd, Fran-is-a-fan, irene and Reemi. |

Johnny
was in LA this weekend for the Secret
Window
press junkets, and Mary
Kay found the first of many great pics at
Wire
Image.com. Mary also built a
composite of all the pics posted so far - quick work,
girl!. Depptwins
reported that the
official Secret Window site has been updated with more
video clips and trailers, while Shadow
found new
SW pics at the Coming Soon site. Secret Window
opens in the States on March
12th -- be sure to put it in your diary!
But it's
not all work and no play... Johnny was spotted at The Venue
theatre in London recently, "laughing like a drain"
at the double-entendres in 'Round
the Horne Revisited'. Thanks SueC
for finding the sweet snippet in 'Now' magazine. |
| |
|
Another
week, another win... Johnny won both 'Best
Actor' and 'Best
Comedic Performance' at the
AOL Moviegoer Awards, as well as being the public's choice
for 'Best Actor'
in Blockbuster's
Oscars predictions, proving yet again that cinema-goers
loved his performance as 'Captain Jack' above all the rest.
Thanks to Desi, Reemi and
Sarah.
And you
can still register your unofficial vote for Johnny at the
fun Oscar polls
at Hollywood.com
and the Salt
Lake Tribune. Thanks Forever
Johnnys and Reemi
for the finds. |

Johnny's
current film, The Libertine, has been rescued from
its financial problems by relocating principal filming to the
Isle of Man, off the west coast of England, from April.
Articles announcing the good news appeared at the
BBC, Coming
Soon, Film
Stew and Fox
news. Thanks to everyone who reported, including johnnylubber,
Miranda, Reemi, Emma and Valeris.
All we can say is: April on an off-shore
island?? Wrap up warm, Johnny! |
| |
 |
Finally,
back in 2002 Johnny contributed to the discussion of Charlie
Chaplin's work in the film 'Charlie: The Life and Art
of Charles Chaplin'. Depptwins
made a great find by locating a
short clip featuring Johnny;
Still-Rather-Timid found a review of the film
at Film
Critic; and
RABrianna reminded
US fans that they can catch the film when
it premieres on the
TCM channel at 8pm on Wed 3rd March. And
for those of you who still haven't caught Johnny's edition
of 'The E! True Hollywood Story', you can see
a little clip at E! Online - thanks Hope. |

February 04:
And then there was Depp... Johnny plundered the SAGs
and grabbed the award for 'Outstanding
Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role' at
last night's Screen
Actors Guild Awards. The announcement of Johnny's name drew
gasps and applause from the audience, and it's put the pundits
into a collective spin about the outcome of next week's Oscars.
This was Johnny's first individual SAG nomination (he was also
nominated in 2001 as a member of the cast of Chocolat),
and HE WON. Go,
Johnny!! Unfortunately for us, he wasn't there to collect his
award. Renee Zelweger said: "Johnny Depp couldn’t
be here this evening, so I’m happy to accept the Actor
on his behalf." |
| |
 |
CNN
reported one reaction to Johnny's surprise win: 'Backstage,
Al Pacino.. amplified the shock of everybody in the crowd. He
lifted an eyebrow and declared himself "really surprised"
and "really thrilled...He's done so many interesting parts
over the years that he got a reputation for being quirky, but
he really wasn't. He's a fine actor." JoBlo
had a rather more upbeat reaction: "Johnny Depp won
BEST ACTOR at this year's SAG awards!! Wow. Is that cool or
what?!" Thanks to Stace,
Really and johnnylubber
for the finds. |
| |
|
Many
thanks to everyone who reported the myriad of today's news items
on Johnny's wonderful win, including Angie,
Anonymous, Julie, deppenpointe, Reemi, Isabelle, Johnny's Savvy
One and Liz.
We've just picked out a few of the fine articles that have those
words we've been waiting for: "Johnny Depp wins the
Best Actor award!". Read the reaction to the news
at Empire,
Rope
of Silicon, AOL,
BBC,
Hollywood
Reporter, Hawaii
Channel, Yahoo
Movies and MSN.

February 04:
More
wins for Johnny and Pirates - this time at JoBlo's
Golden
Schmoes Awards.
Johnny won the 'Best Actor of the Year' Award
as well as 'Favorite Celebrity', 'Coolest Character' (for Jack
Sparrow), and 'Best Line of the Year' (for "But why
is the rum gone?") as well as bagging the 'Best Supporting
Actor' runner-up place for his role as Agent Sands in Once
Upon a Time in Mexico. And Pirates of the Caribbean
won 'Biggest Surprise of the Year', as well as runner-up for
'Best DVD' and 'Most Memorable Scene'. Thanks
johnnylubber and
Savvy for the
news. |
| |
|
Johnny
also won 'Best Actor'
in the Annual Apex Awards’ Fantasy/Science
Fiction/Horror category, and Pirates won for
both Sound and Hairstyling. Pirates also won two
awards at the Visual
Effects Society Awards, for Special Effects and Matte
Painting. Johnny
& Pirates are also nominated for the annual
Saturn Awards, including 'Best
Actor' category - winners will be announced
on May 5th. And finally, Movieline magazine (Feb issue) has
named its own 'alternative choices' and Johnny won the 'Best
Use of Bling Bling'. Thanks micdus
and Depp's Debb
for the nice finds. |
| |
|
Johnny
graced London's red carpet last Sunday 15th February for the
BAFTA Awards, and the snappers were out in force. Bill Murray
won 'Best Actor', but Ve Neill and Martin Samuel picked up the
award for 'Best Make-up and Hair' for Pirates of the Caribbean.
Getty
Images and Yahoo!
definitely had the yummiest photos from the event, while Ananova
and a typically funny Empire
article noted that "the biggest screams of the evening
were reserved for the fully fledged sex god and newly-minted
comic icon, Johnny Depp". |
| |
|
You
can catch more pics at Wire
Image and London
Features International, and Lynn has screencaps
of Johnny on the red carpet as well as JD's
reaction to Stephen Fry's witty opening speech. You can
also see a couple of little pics at Splash
News of Johnny arriving with Harvey Weinstein at the after-show
party.
Thanks
to Reemi, Emma, depptwins, 1st,
Lynn, Donna B, neophyte, Mary Kay for being
so quick off the mark at finding the great pics and articles. |

JoBlo
has posted up a high-resolution version of the new Secret
Window poster, which they reckon bears a striking resemblance
to the UK/French version of The
Ninth Gate poster. What do you think? There's a Secret
Window flipbook at Rope of Silicon, including brand new
pics of 'Mort Rainey' in a range of colourful cardigans. The
BBSpot has a
mixed review of the Secret
Window trailer, which Apple
Trailers has in 3 sizes. And SW tv spots are starting
up in the US – try MTV and Comedy Central to catch them.
Thanks to
Newbie, Reemi, Anon in LA, Ichabod’s Baby Girl, Alexa,
Just Wondering and Depp Fan/Lover for
the news. |
| |
|
Emma
and Anon in
LA report that the Secret
Window press junkets will be held in LA from
27 February and in NYC on 6-7 March. And we've some news on
the highly-anticipated Secret
Window premiere, thanks to Anon
in LA who reports
that it will be held in New
York on Sunday 7th March at Loews Lincoln Square
(1998 Broadway @ 68th St). Stay tuned for further details
as we get them! And,
finally, some not-so-good news for UK fans, as the
UK release date slips back a couple of weeks to 30
April. |

"Depp
is shockingly well-liked"... Should he win? Will
he win? The Oscar debate
is still raging among the critics. Net
Monster, M
Live.com and RGJ.com
all believe that Johnny deserves to win the Best Actor Oscar,
and David
Poland thinks that Depp might be the dark horse of the race.
Whatever the outcome, it's Johnny's face that's gracing MSN's
Oscar page. And LA-based fans should watch 'Eyewitness News'
on ABC7, weekday mornings from 6am for their daily Red
Carpet Trivia Contest (see link in right-hand column at
their site) for the chance to win Academy Awards' Red Carpet
tickets. Thanks deppaholic101,
Really, Reemi, micdus, Newbie and Anon
in LA. |

Johnny Birthday Project will close on March
15th, so get your order in now! This is Don
Juan's Darling's wonderful idea for collecting
fans' contributions for a charity gift in celebration of Johnny's
41st birthday on June 9th. And she's also interested in gathering
ideas for new product lines - check out her site for details. |

Sony
Pictures has a
contest promoting the US dvd release of Once Upon a
Time in Mexico. The sweepstake is open to US residents
only, and the prize is a holiday to Mexico. The closing date
is 19 March, so
trot on over to the site. Thanks Meeps
for the find. And Moliere
reports that Charlie: The Life and Art of Charles Chaplin,
which includes an interview with Johnny, is now on limited release
in the States. The film's also being screened in the US on the
TCM channel on March 3rd and 31st. |

US
magazines: As well as the Annie Liebowitz
study of Johnny in this month's 'Vanity
Fair' magazine (the Hollywood issue), he's also on the
cover of 'TV
Guide' (Feb 21-27 edition) and there's a Johnny cartoon
on the cover of MAD
magazine (March issue). 'Entertainment Weekly' has a picture
from 'Secret Window', and the March issue of the kids' magazine
'Disney Insider' has 4 comic pages entitled "In Jack
We Trust." International
mags: There's
an article on Johnny in 'Sneak' mag - issue of 24 Feb (UK),
in the
Swedish edition of 'Elle' (March issue) and Johnny & Vanessa
are on the cover of the French 'DS' mag (March issue). Thanks
to Ellen, Sam, Abigail, johnnylubber.
Elsie, Helen, Pammy Sue and everyone who reported
the new issues at the bookstalls. |

Will
21 Jump Street
finally come to dvd? The
reply to one fan's query from The Cannell Company
is encouraging.
Thanks MiMi, Halia and
L
for the intriguing find. On the same subject, we've never
heard any more about the proposed 21
Jump Street
film that was announced in late 2002 (which is probably
a good thing).
And Nigel
Goodall has updated his 1999 biography of Johnny. The
revised edition, entitled What's Eating Johnny Depp,
will be published in the UK in June. Thanks to DeepinDepp
and Sharon for
the info. |

Closing
a tax loophole that rids the UK of some nice Hollywood cash
and Johnny Depp? What were they thinking?
More articles found by Depps Debb,
Lizzie and Emma,
on the sudden pulling of tax advantages for filmmaking in the
UK at Lori
Smith's site, the
BBC, The
Guardian and the Financial
Times. All we can do now is cross our fingers and toes (and
our legs, given that the lusty Rochester is in the frame) and
hope that The Libertine's production company sort out
the funding to go ahead with filming in England. If all goes
well, principal photography should start in two weeks' time. |
| |
|
Casting
auditions for the child stars of Charlie
and the Chocolate Factory are taking place now in both
the UK and the US. Emma
found this typical article at the
North Devon Journal. Filming is due to start in summer '04
in England (assuming that the tax changes don't impact that
production too!). And before that movie's even started, Johnny's
name is being mentioned in connection with another film -- this
time, the challenging adaptation of Jean-Dominique Bauby's memoir
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.
Alexa, Emma, JDGirl, Reemi, and Chicago
Jazz found articles at Coming
Soon, JoBlo,
Chud
and Empire,
and The Scientist
found a
fascinating article on Bauby's book. |

February 04:
Good news for UK and US fans: the upcoming BAFTA
and SAG award ceremonies will be screened on
a tv near you!
The BAFTAs (the British Academy of Film and Television Arts)
award ceremony is held this Sunday
15th February at the Odeon, Leicester Square,
London. They're the UK's equivalent of the Oscars, and Johnny
is nominated for 'Best Actor',
with Pirates as one of the contenders for 'Orange Film
of the Year'. Johnny might not make it to the award show, according
to this
article found by Emma,
but keep your fingers crossed! UK
fans can watch 'Live from the Red Carpet' coverage
from
4pm on E!, and the ceremony itself on BBC1
at 9pm. US fans
can catch it live on BBC
America from 4pm ET, or else see it on Monday 16th on E!
at 8:00am ET. |

|
The
Screen
Actors Guild (SAG) awards ceremony will be held at The
Shrine, Los Angeles on Sunday
22nd February. Johnny is nominated for 'Outstanding
Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role'.
US fans can
watch the ceremony live on TNT
at 8pm ET, and UK fans
can catch it the following day on Living
TV at 9pm (Sky channel 112). If you're interested in getting
a grandstand view of the red carpet, Anon
in LA has tipped that SAG bleacher tickets
are likely to be auctioned
on eBay courtesy of the YMCA youth program. |

Finally,
finally!
Johnny won the 'Best Actor' Award
at the Sony Ericsson 'Empire
Movie Awards' last week, voted for by movie-goers. JD was
up against Viggo Mortensen, Hugh Jackman, Sean Astin and Daniel
Day-Lewis, but his inspired turn as Captain Jack won the hearts
and the votes of the public. Three of Johnny's Pirates
co-stars collected the award on his behalf, and you can hear
their acceptance speech at Empire Online. Johnny also won
the 'Male Standout Performance'
award in the TV
& E! on-line poll. Thanks
Emma, johnnylubber
and Annie for
reporting the great news. |

Just
give the friggin’ Oscar to Johnny! So says Brachman.com,
and there are more shout-outs for Johnny’s Oscar chances
at Chart
Attack, KVue
and the Daily
Northwestern. But is Oscar good for a laugh? The Academy
members aren't exactly known for honouring comedic performances,
says USA
Today and Star
eCentral, which makes Johnny's nomination all the more impressive.
Thanks SD, micdus, Really, Reemi,
johnnylubber and Alex
for the finds. And Emma
found a superb review of the Deppster's work in Backstage
West magazine (issue of 12 Feb), which also notes how highly
Johnny is regarded by his peers in the acting industry. |
| |
 |
"Among
the more established actors, no nomination was more welcome
than Johnny Depp's." So said the
Sun-Sentinel. If you missed watching the announcement of
the Academy Awards' Best Actor nominees, you can catch the
video clip at the USA Today site. Scroll down the the right-hand
column to the ‘Beyond Words’ clip listings. And
there's a nice little bio write-up of 'Johnny Depp, acting outlaw',
at the
BBC -- with the Zone
as the ‘JD fansite' link! (We’re famous, folks!).
Thanks johnnylubber,
Really, Denice
and everyone else who reported on the Oscar buzz. |

While
Los Angeles is preparing for the Oscar ceremony on 29th February,
you can eat your way to victory with these wonderful Oscar
cookies! Click on the link to the 'Best Actor and Actress
Cookie tins' at the bottom of the site, to see a life-like
edible Johnny along with his fellow nominees. Thanks ANV
for the delicious find :-)

"I'd
like to propose that the Academy adopt a new category:
Most Entertaining Actor. Hands down,
the award would go to Johnny Depp, whose work in Pirates of
the Caribbean was, to this moviegoer, the performance of the
year.” So says David Granger, Editor of Esquire
magazine, in their March 2004 issue. Thanks E
Bronte for finding the great quote. And there's
still time to express your own views by voting in AOL’s
Moviegoer Awards -- the winners are announced on February
24th. And you can register your own view on the year's Best
Actor at these polls: Hollywood
Reporter, Film
Four, and also at Netscape's Favourite
Movie Star poll. Thanks Sleepy
and PJ. And look
out today, Feb 13th, for the winners of JoBlo’s
Golden Schmoes. |
| |
|
Once
upon A Time in Mexico has just released in Australia, and
Sleepy found
an fine interview at the
F2 network. There's also an interview with Robert Rodriguez
at the Hollywood
Reporter and a little snippet with Johnny at BBCi
Films. And JP
reports that Rodriquez has issued a follow-up music CD called
Mexico
and Mariachis - some of the music is from the movie and
some that never made the final cut (no Sands Theme, though).
The insert has a stylized painting of Sheldon Jeffrey Sands,
our favorite CIA agent. Good stuff. |

If
you haven't visited Sony's official Secret
Window site recently, you've got a nice surprise in
store... Click on each lens of Mort Rainey's glasses in turn,
to play the trailer or read the short plot synopsis. The Z Review
has a snapshot of the riveting film
poster. While you're waiting to get your hands on it, we've
made wallpapers
for you to download to your desktop: 1024
x 768, and 800
x 600. Secret Window releases on 12
March in the States and is rated PG-13. And
European fans won't have long to wait for the movie either --
it releases in the
UK and Germany
on 16 April. |

|
Philip
Glass has been commissioned to score the music for Secret
Window, which will please many fans. You can watch Extra!
tv's little video
feature on the film and work your way through the intriguing
pics in the
Secret Window flipbook at Rotten Tomatoes, while
saving up your cash for the movie-tie-in
book due to be published in March. Thanks to Linda
B, Sharon, DeepinDepp, inna,
depptwins, johnnylubber,
hellah and everyone who reported the news on
Johnny's latest film. |
| |
|
"That's
nice." When Johnny was spotted filming JM Barrie's
Neverland on location in London in summer '02, he happily
obliged by posing
for a fan's photo. And talking of Neverland, Harvey
Weinstein briefly mentions the reason for moving its release
up to October. Thanks Reemi
and Liz for the
neat finds. |
| |
|
Emma
found a casting
article on The Libertine, the film about John
Wilmot the Earl of Rochester, that Johnny's just about to
start shooting in England with John Malkovich. But the sudden
closing of a tax loophole by the Inland Revenue might force
the production company to re-stage the film in tax-friendly
Europe instead, according to articles that Emma
has hunted down in The
Times, The
Daily Telegraph, the Financial
Times, and Variety
this week. We're keeping our fingers crossed that this fascinating
film will get made - either in England or further east! |
| |
|
Finally,
with Valentine's Day just around the corner... Shannon
demands a recount of Johnny's ranking in 'The
Seducers'; an article at the
Star purports to know the ins & outs of Johnny &
Vanessa's private life in Paris; The Sexiest Man Alive features
in FilmStew's
review of 2003; and, at the USA Weekend site, photographer
Nigel Parry reports that "Johnny Depp was as cool
as cool gets," during their photo session on the rooftops
of Paris. Thanks Really,
johnnylubber and Emma
for the terrific finds - and to Nigel Parry for giving us the
best photos of Johnny that we've seen so far this year! |
